I wrote about wrong-way drivers in our April newsletter and this month alone I posted 3 more wrong-way crashes.  DrivingMBA has been interviewed by several major news stations and in a recent radio interview I gave the following advice:

  1. DO NOT DRIVE DISTRACTED –  you need to be Scanning your environment, Identifying anything  that may become or a hazard to you (a driver coming at you head on qualifies), Plan what you are going to do, Decide what you are going to do and Execute your plan.  This ALL happens in a matter of seconds, so if you are driving distracted you won’t have the time to get out of the way.
  2. Avoid using the HOV lane as many of these crashes are taking place in that lane.  The wall creates blind areas where you can’t see what is coming, particularly on a ramp or curve.

One of the recent incidents happened on the stack near the I-17 which means there was limited space available.  If that is the case you would need to use whatever space is available to you, even if it means scraping the side of the wall to get out of the way.  This would need to be a controlled maneuver because hitting the wall at too high a speed would cause you to veer out of control as well.  The BEST thing to do is not to use HOV ramps, particularly at night.
