Are the Roads in Your City Safe?

If you were told by a traffic safety expert that the roads in your city were great places to avoid because they were the least safe in the United States, I bet you’d be angry, or at least alarmed.  Well folks,

if you live in Detroit, Jacksonville, Memphis, Dallas, Phoenix or Houston, get ready for a dose of reality – these are the top six cities with the most fatal traffic crashes per 1,000 population!

Since Red Means Stop is based in Arizona, we are concerned that Phoenix, our largest city and State Capitol is number five on this list. Not too long ago, Phoenix was number one nationally in red light running fatalities, so I guess there is some comfort in knowing we have improved – slightly. Sadly though, we have a long way to go in reducing the number of deaths and injuries on our roadways.

Red Means Stop continues to advocate for better training and education, especially for new teen drivers. If we expect our children to grow into safe drivers when they reach adulthood, neglecting the basics as teens is a huge mistake. Many adults today never faced the challenges our teens currently face on the road when they were learning to drive.  Traffic conditions are far worse and the distractions are greater than ever before – and probably won’t get better anytime soon. We owe it to the next generation to be prepared and the best way to do that is by teaching them safety and responsibility.

In case you were wondering, the US cities with the safest roads are New York, Boston and San Francisco.
